The painter, who lives and works in Badacsonytomaj, was born in Baja, in 1929. The outstanding artist has received several awards, such as the Kossuth Award in 1999. Art historian Mimi Kratochwill describes Erzsébet Udvardy as follows: “We can measure the importance and uniqueness of the artist’s lifework on the basis of what she’s done so far. Her art and interests include religious works and biblical paintings, paintings of her childhood and memories of her parents, pictures inspired by mythological themes and illustrative oil paintings based on the greatest literary works as well as paintings inspired by the upper Balaton region. Her compositions were turned into in oil paintings, wall paintings, woodpanel paintings, watercolours, charcoal and pencil drawings, always according to the given topic and the circumstances given by the location. … The Bible has always meant great inspiration for the artistic work of Erzsébet Udvardi. … She turns the words of the Holy Script into a sight, and transubstantiates them into modern pictures with a characteristically personal opinion.”The stamp designs are reproductions of Erzsébet Udvardi’s paintings “Adoration of the Magi” and “Bethlehem”. The design of the special cover that belongs to the series of stamps presents the artist’s picture “Madonna with the child”, and the motif of the special cancellation stamp is the stylised image of the Star of Bethlehem. The stamp and the envelope designs, in accordance with the originals, were made with a special printing technology using gold and silver foil. Following the traditions, during the Advent week there will be special cancellation stamping in the village of Nagykarácsony again.
