Famous Hungarian Persons - Miklós Zrínyi
"The unrelenting siege began on 9 August and the defenders, reduced to just 600, were forced into the keep. After waiting in vain for relief from the imperial army positioned in Győr to defend Vienna and a persistent drought that dried up the marshes and the moat, on 8 September 1566 Zrínyi and his remaining force of 300 sallied forth from the blazing fortress. He was captured and beheaded by the Turks. (Source: http://hu.wikipedia.org) In the foreground of the design is a portrait of Zrínyi, based on a painting by Miklós Barabás, while the theme of the image in the background after a drawing by Bertalan Székely shows Miklós Zrínyi preparing for the last charge. The first day cover features Zrínyi’s coat of arms and the siege of Szigetvár in 1566 based on a con-temporary engraving. The postmark shows the hero’s helmet, club and sword in a stylised form. "
