"Károly Knezich (1808–49), a Hungarian army general, was one of the martyrs of Arad. As a member of the imperial army, in the spring of 1848 he offered his services to the Hungarian army. He took part in the campaign against the Serbs and in the battles of Tápióbicske and Komárom. Due to his military successes he was promoted rapidly and, when János Damjanich was wounded, he became a general and commander of the third corps. After the battle of Pered, he was relieved of his command by Artúr Görgey and then Lajos Kossuth appointed him commander of the Upper Tisza corps and he served in the Ministry of Defence. Kossuth wanted to make him governor of Transylvania but, as the military situation deteriorated, he was put at the helm of an improvised corps. He surrendered at Világos. He was sentenced to be hung, and was the fourth of the martyrs to be executed.
