ITEM NO: 2008151010011-

"György Zala (original family name: Mayer, Alsólendva, 16 April 1858 – Budapest, 31 July 1937), sculptor, was a major figure in official fin-de-si?cle art and the most significant exponent of neo-baroque memorial sculpture. He won numerous decorations, awards and gold medals, and received the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph on 6 June 1896. His name is associated with the Millennium Memorial on Heroes’ Square in the City Park in Budapest. The bronze statues were designed by and most of them made by Zala. The statue of the Archangel Gabriel shown on the stamp won the grand prix at the world exposition in Paris in 1900. The almost 5 metre tall statue of Gabriel with outstretched wings stands on a 36 m high column. In one hand he holds the Holy Crown of Hungary and in the other he raises aloft a double cross as he did in the leg-end when he appeared to St Stephen, the founder of the state, in a dream. (Source: http://hu.wikipedia.org) The first day cover for the stamp depicting the statue of the Archangel Gabriel shows a detail of Heroes’ Square. The special postmark features a portrait of György Zala."
