"The Hungarian Post Office Ltd. is issuing a special block of stamps with two stamp designs to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of two major events in Hungarian sports history, the opening of the Peoples Stadium and the 1953 football match between England and Hungary. On 19th and 20th August 1953, an old dream of the sport-loving people of Hungary became a reality: the ceremonial opening of the national stadium was held. By the standards of the time, the People’s Stadium, as it was called following the dictates of the period, was considered world class. Over a hundred thousand spectators watched and celebrated the opening events, an athletics match between Hungary and Norway (result: 140.5:71.5) and a football match between Honvéd of Budapest and Spartak Moscow (result: 3:2). Over the last fifty years the Peoples Stadium has hosted outstanding national and international sporting and cultural events. An important point in the stadium’s history was when it was renamed in 2002. Since then it has been called the Ferenc Puskás Stadium after the legendary footballer, a key player in the “Golden Team”, the great Hungarian national team of the 1950s. On 25th November 1953 the footballers of two countries, Hungary, the 1952 Olympic champions, and England, undefeated at home for 90 years, pitted their strengths against each other at Wembley Stadium in England. During the match, the Hungarian team astonished spectators with 90 minutes of dream football and inflicted a crushing defeat on England, ranked among the best in the world. In Hungary the match is often referred to only by its final score as “6:3”. Everyone agreed that Hungary was the best team in the world. “Sepp” Herberger, the German team manager, said, “It is impossible to describe what the Hungarians have shown the masters of football regarding ball technique, strategic performance and tactical abilities.” The designs of the stamps in the block placed under each other show photograph-based graphic elements referring to the events being commemorated. The frame surrounding the stamp designs of the numbered block is completed by the distinctive construction of the Ferenc Puskás Stadium. Material from the archives of the Sports Museum was used in the graphic design. The graphics of the first day cover and the special postmark belonging to the block consist of a montage referring to the anniversaries. "
