Aniamals of the continents V. - Europe
"On the design of the numbered souvenir sheet there are two fighting red deer. Outside the perforation of the stamp a barn owl, red squirrel, greenfinch, green lacerta and pine-marten are depicted on a background of vegetation. The red deer (cervus elaphus) belongs to the family of cervidae and occurs mainly in Europe. Only the males have magnificent antlers. The rutting season is from early September until the end of October, well-known for the belling of the stags. This protected animal also occurs in Hungary where typically it lives in mountain and flood basin woodlands. Every movement of the red deer is graceful, but at the same time full of pride and dignity. Its usual gait is quite brisk, at a canter it goes very quickly and at full pace it is unbelievably fast. It effortlessly jumps over great distances and, if necessary, it can swim across wide rivers with ease. On the commemorative cover there is a drawing of an ibex (capra ibex), and on the commemorative postmark the beetle clytus tropicus is depicted."
