"Magyar Posta presents the 750-year-old Szigliget Castle on a commemorative postcard. Szigliget Castle is perched on top of one of the conical volcanic hills of the Balaton Uplands. According to its charter granted by Béla IV, the Benedictine monks of Pannonhalma began its construction between 1260-62. In 1441 Jeromos Némai Kolos was endowed with the castle by Vladislaus I, but from 1445 until 1521 it was owned by the Újlaki family. In 1531 Bálint Török of Enying, who at the time supported the Habsburg king, Ferdinand I, received a deed of gift for it. As the Turkish invaders pushed forward rapidly through the Balaton region, Szigliget was part of the chain of defensive castles. During its period of tenure by the Lengyel aristocratic family, its most famous castellan was Bálint Magyar. In the 16th century the castle was already considered obsolete as it did not lie on the route of major campaigns, and thus it was not modernised. Its fate was sealed, like so many mediaeval hilltop castles’, by a lightning strike. In 1702 Leopold I had Szigliget Castle demolished among others. In 1913, 1953 and in 1965-66 the remaining walls were strengthened. Today it is a popular venue for historical re-enactments and cultural events.
