"Magyar Posta is issuing a commemorative postcard to mark the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the Szent-Györgyi Albert Secondary and Vocational School in Balassagyarmat. The legal predecessor of the Szent-Györgyi Albert Secondary and Vocational School opened on 1 September 1951 as the State Teacher and Schoolmistress Training College. Education began with two classes with 45 girls and 43 boys. The following year the practice primary school was organised. In the academic year 1954-55 the teacher training school was expanded by 220 pupils. By that time it already had its own boarding facilities. The school’s official name changed to the State General Secondary School No. 2 in the academic year 1960-61. In this school year there were 3 coeducational first-year classes in the sciences and humanities besides the girls’ class. This completed the secondary educational programme. Before long the school was named after a person. At the naming ceremony on 22 November 1961, the name the Szántó Kovács János Secondary School was adopted. The health education programme began in September 1968 and the school took over the specialisation in agricultural machinery from the Balassi Secondary School in 1970. In 1972 it was expanded by the pre-school teaching section. In 1984 secondary education began again. The school’s name became the Szántó Kovács János Secondary and Vocational School and, instead of the pre-school teaching department, starting secondary school was con-centrated on. In the summer of 1989 the school moved to a new building. Here under the auspices of the Education and Cultural Centre and Library it had to learn to co-exist with three other institutions, the Workers’ Secondary School, the Cultural Centre and the Municipal Library. The school building proved to be too small from the start due to the rising number of pupils. On 15 March 1994 the school was renamed after the famous Nobel Prize winning scientist Albert Szent-Györgyi. The school’s activity in the area of health and biology is closely associated with the scientist. (Source: szentgyorgyi-bgy.sulinet.hu) In the centre of the picture side of the postcard the school’s former building when it bore János Szántó Kovács’s name can be seen, with views of the interior and exterior of the present-day school around it. The background printing on the back of the card features Demonstration Lesson (1953) by András Farkas. The stamp design of the postcard shows the logo of the Szent-Györgyi Albert Secondary and Vocational School in Balassagyarmat with a portrait of Albert Szent-Györgyi. The design of the commemorative postmark shows the number of the anniversary and the school’s new logo."
