"The Herend Porcelain Manufactory was established in 1839 by the capitalist Mór Fischer. In spite of the fluctuating fortunes of the factory over its one and a half centuries of operation, the value of Herend porcelain has always come out on top. Its raison de d’?tre is proved by the knowledge of the porcelain makers and painters, the satisfaction of the customers and the number of prizes won at world expositions. Stamps presenting Herend porcelain have already been issued in Hungary in 1972 and 1976. The works depicted on the stamps issued now are in order:Ornamental plate with floral pattern – The large 52 cm diameter ornamental plate has a rich floral pattern and a reticulated edge, one of the characteristic decorative elements of Herend porcelain. Frankenthal coffee service – Herend’s high artistic standards enabled it to adopt and adapt in its own way motifs characteristic of the former Frankenthal Porcelain Manufactory in Germany. An excellent example of this is the coffee service shown in the stamp design.Goblet with ram’s heads – The openwork goblet has approximately 4,500 holes and a ram’s head on each side. The medallion on this exceptionally fine, elegant goblet is artistically painted with flowers.Coffee service with blue background – This coffee service made in the 19th century is now a museum piece. The fine, gold painted pattern on a blue ground reflects the taste of the period.Vase with cobalt blue background – In Herend there is a great tradition of reproducing paintings on porcelain objects. The blue, Empire style vase shows a reproduction of a painting by Károly Markó, Landscape near Tivoli with a Grape Harvesting Scene. Siang Noir shell bowl and jug – The tradition of producing chinoiserie at Herend can be traced back to the manufactory’s very beginning. The Siang Noir pattern is one of Herend’s oldest, and it is still extremely popular today. The form of the bowl and jug – evoking days gone by – match each other perfectly. The edge of the small sheet is enriched by further objects and their details from the world of Herend porcelain. The special cover shows scenes from the historical craftsman’s workshop, and the cancellation mark’s main motif is the well-known Herend mark."
